Nuclear Cardiology Stress Test

These can be plain or nuclear stress tests and are done under the supervision of an on site cardiologist. Nuclear stress tests involves an injection of a radiopharmaceutical, which circulates in the bloodstream and shows the blood flow to the heart.


The test consists of two parts: stress and rest imaging, both involving the injection of radiopharmaceutical and taking pictures of the heart. There are a number of variations to performing the test and you will be informed which portion will be done first, according to the protocol used. ECG electrodes will be attached to your chest to monitor your heart rate before, during and after exercise. At the same time a blood pressure cuff will be placed on your arm to monitor your blood pressure. Additionally, an intravenous catheter will be placed in your arm or your hand to inject the radiopharmaceutical.


The stress portion can either be done on a treadmill or by using a small dose of a drug that will mimic the effects of exercise. These tests are excellent to detect changes in the cardiac blood vessels.

A regular stress test is used to measure the heart's ability to respond to exercise in a controlled clinical environment. During a stress test the patient is hooked up with a 12-lead electrocardiograph to monitor changes throughout the exercise. The technologist giving the test will monitor ECG and Blood Pressure trends and correlate them to any symptoms the patient is having. This test is non-invasive and a useful tool to aid in the diagnosis of ischemic heart disease, assessing conduction disturbances in the heart, and as a post-operative monitoring tool.
